The Wiltshire village of Great Bedwyn is an idyllic and historic settlement near the centre of the Great West Way. Visitors can enjoy lovely landscapes and historic walks along the canal on a visit to Great Bedwyn as part of a journey along the route of the Great West Way. As you explore the village, you will see cute cottages, picture-perfect streets and historic buildings - including the church of St Mary's. The welcoming market towns of Marlborough and Hungerford are also both nearby and well worth a visit!

The Three Tuns Freehouse at Great Bedwyn will welcome you for lunch or dinner; this award-winning independent Freehouse has an excellent local reputation for good-quality food and drink.

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Great Bedwyn

The Kennet and Avon Canal - looked after by the Canal and River Trust - flows through the village of Great Bedwyn. This pretty waterway wends through the countryside of the Great West Way for nearly 90 miles, attracting walkers, cyclists, boaters and wildlife-spotters. The wharf at Great Bedwyn is a good spot from which to begin your exploration of the canal, and the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust run accessible boat trips from here.

Surrounding Countryside

Great Bedwyn is located in the timeless county of Wiltshire, within the Vale of Pewsey. This is a stunning, ancient landscape of unspoilt villages, gently rolling hills and mist-filled valleys which has recently been awarded 'Walkers are Welcome' accreditation. The Vale of Pewsey is part of the wider North Wessex Downs area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Great Bedwyn offers easy access to explore these picture-perfect English landscapes.

Walkers may enjoy a hillside jaunt up to Wilton Windmill for stunning views over the surrounding countryside, or a gentle stroll along the canal to see England’s industrial history in action at Crofton Beam Engines.

Transport to Great Bedwyn

However you choose to travel the Great West Way (foot, bike, car, boat or train are all options!) you will find it easy to stop off in Great Bedwyn along the way.
